A Bug is an Alien Too

No need to fly to outer space
To meet an alien face to face.
No need for a ship to take you away,
To beam you up in a techno-ray.

A bug is an alien too.

Don’t wait for rocket ships to Mars,
Or long for sonic astrocars!
Don’t sit and hope, a galactic dope,
Squinting through a telescope!

A bug is an alien too.

Just take a knee beside a tree
and catch a beetle, ant, or flea.
Then look inside its beady eyes.
Good thing bugs are tiny-size!

A bug is an alien too.

A Sand Runner’s off for a run in the sun.
A Seababy’s lucky to catch sight of one.
Wetting her lashes in splishes and splashes,
a Sand Runner drips with wishes and dashes.

Cool in the water and warm in the sun,
she’s out and about on the lookout for fun.
A toe in the ocean, a toe in the sand,
it’s good to be wet on the watery land.

What does she see when she looks out to sea?
A Seababy you and a Seababy me.
Saltwater, seawater, day is not done
till she’s filled to the brim with water and sun!

cannot
do a lot.

I found a cave on Nimbus 9
inside a jungle green.
I thought I’d poke my head inside
to see what could be seen.

But then I got a sudden whiff,
of old and dirty toes,
and I recalled what Mama said,
“A boy can trust his nose.”

I don’t believe in aliens,
in life among the stars,
in UFO’s, flying saucers,
or little men from Mars.

I don’t believe in aliens.
They’re just a fantasy.
The only things that I believe
are things that I can see.

You need a banner you can fly,
a phrase to flutter ‘cross the sky.
A banner tells us what you love
about the moon and stars above.

So think it up and write it down.
Parade it all around the town,
then take your colored pencils out
and make your banner scream and shout.

My robot said to use my brain.
“A headless heart is half insane.”
My alien said to use my heart.
“A heartless head cannot be smart.”

My robot spit; my alien cried.
I just wanted to run and hide.
I just don’t know what I should do
when I am caught between the two.
